WHITEFISH CYCLIST KILLED IN CRASH
A 28-year-old Whitefish man was killed on Aug. 14 when he was hit by a car on Wisconsin Avenue, the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office announced.
Jared Frederick Kinney was rid- ing his bicycle near the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Edgewood Place when the vehicle struck him just before 9:30 p.m.
According to the Whitefish Police Department, Kinney was pinned under the vehicle and EMTs had to use airbags to lift it off of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Chief Bill Dial said it appears the man was biking against traffic and did not have a head- light at the time of the accident.
Kinney had recently moved to Whitefish from Wayland, New York.
The Whitefish Police Department and the Montana Highway Patrol are in- vestigating the incident.
MISSOULA MAN PRESUMED DEAD IN MIDDLE THOMPSON LAKE
A 62-year-old Missoula man is pre- sumed dead after he reportedly fell off a boat in the Middle Thompson Lake between Kalispell and Libby over the weekend, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Anthony Joseph Bachman report- edly fell off a boat and drowned while intoxicated shortly after 6 p.m. Aug. 16. He was not wearing a personal floatation device. People aboard the boat were un- successful in rescuing Bachman.
As of Monday, Bachman’s body had not been recovered. Sheriff Roby Bowe said divers were using sonar equipment to comb the lake that is, in parts, 160 feet deep. The Lincoln County Sheriff, Fish- er River Valley Fire and Rescue, David Thompson Search and Rescue, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the Flat- head County Sheriff’s Office.
The Lincoln County Sheriff and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are investigating the incident.
LIVINGSTON WOMAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH
A 59-year-old Livingston woman was killed on Aug. 17 when the motor- cycle she was riding with another person collided with a vehicle at the intersec- tion of U.S. Highway 2 and West Valley Drive, the Flathead County Sheriff’s Of- fice reported.
Lori Armentaro Smith, the passen- ger on the motorcycle, was pronounced
dead at the scene shortly before 6 p.m. on the night of the crash. The driver of the motorcycle was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. The driver’s condition is unknown at this time.
The Montana Highway Patrol is cur- rently investigating the crash.

WAR COLLEGE BEGINS REVIEW INTO SENATOR’S WORK
A U.S. Army War College spokes- woman says no information will be re- leased about an investigation into pla- giarism allegations against Sen. John Walsh until the process is complete.
Spokeswoman Carol Kerr made her comments to The Associated Press as the Carlisle, Pennsylvania, college’s aca- demic review board took up the investi- gationFriday.
The New York Times in July found the Montana Democrat used others’ work without attribution in a 2007 re- search paper required for a master’s de- gree.
Walsh had the opportunity to appear before the board or submit documenta- tion in his defense. Spokeswoman An- drea Helling referred questions to the college, and Kerr declined further com- ment.
The board’s findings will be reviewed by the Department of Defense’s inspec- tor general, and the decision on whether punishment is warranted will be up to the college.
MONTANA UNEMPLOYMENT UP SLIGHTLY TO 4.6 PERCENT
Montana’s seasonally adjusted un- employment rate rose slightly to 4.6 per- cent in July.
The state Labor Department says the national unemployment rate also increased by 0.1 percentage points last month, to 6.2 percent.
More than 12,000 jobs have been created in Montana since the beginning of 2014 and the unemployment rate has fallen by 0.7 percentage points over the same time.
Labor Commissioner Pam Bucy says strong job creation and more Montan- ans returning to the workforce shows increasing optimism about the state’s economy.
Officials say payroll employment es- timates suggest Montana added 3,100 jobs in July, but total employment — in- cluding agricultural jobs and the self- employed — left that increase at 159 jobs. State officials say 577 people joined the workforce last month.
