ENJOY THE SCENIC VIEWS OF Glacier National Park as the tran- sition into autumn commences with colorful awe. With the crowds sub- siding, one of the best places to witness an idyllic panorama is from the Highline Trail, one of the quintessential hikes in the park’s alpine country. The High- line Trail traces 7.6 miles from Logan Pass along the Continental Divide to the Granite Park Chalet, a remote back- country destination. From the chalet, the trail descends another five miles to The Loop. It’s mostly downhill throughout the whole trek.
The park’s free shuttle system stopped Sept. 7, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it work. It just requires a little more logistical planning. Park a vehicle at The Loop and drive up to Logan Pass. Depart from Logan Pass and hike down to The Loop. Afterward, you’ll have to drive back up and pick up the other vehi- cle, but that just provides another oppor- tunity to travel the iconic Going-to-the- Sun Road, which will stay open on the west side through the third week in Octo- ber this fall.
Remember to pack warm clothes and proper gear and equipment, as well as plenty of drinking water. Conditions can rapidly change in Glacier Park.
