THE MONTANA WEST ECONOMIC DEVELOP- ment (MWED) board of directors completed its three-year strategic plan recently. The main strat- egy is to provide effective resources and services to assist the formation and launch of new companies and assist ex- panding companies.
The Flathead/Glacier Park region has long been a startup “community.” The majority of our region’s compa- nies have launched rather than relocated. The three main location factors for companies to relocate/expand are 1) to serve a large customer; 2) to serve a large market; and 3) the CEO or decision-maker selects where they want to live.
The MWED members have thoughtfully focused their valuable, but limited, resources towards the objective with the most bang for the buck, growing our own business. There are a few stories of companies relocating and all were because the founder/CEO desires to live in the region.
Montana West performs outreach through various for- mats to promote the Flathead as a place to do business to plant a seed to visitors that they can live, work and play here. MWED has relationships built with out-of-state in- dividuals who have expressed interest in operating their business from here. You won’t see a million dollar ad cam- paign targeted at business attraction efforts from MWED, but less expensive tactics are being deployed to connect with interested, successful business people.
One of the “events” to foster startup companies and eventually jobs is the Glacier Startup Weekend. Held last weekend at Flathead Valley Community College, near- ly 100 people in the room Friday evening networked and “pitched” in to assess and inspire business ideas, and en- courage those ideas into startup companies.
There are four new startup companies today as a result of Startup Weekend. As I reflect on the event, the support was 100 percent positive from the public and local media.
Thank you. Your enduring support for the entrepre- neurial ecosystem makes the difference.
