The Changing Behaviors of Teenaged Students Survey shows smoking, drinking down among Flathead County students

Student populations change over gen- erations but many teenage behaviors can stay the same.
However, ongoing surveys show the
habits of Montana high school students
are indeed changing, oftentimes for the
of Public Instruction surveys high school students across the state. Nearly 4,500 students in 49 public schools took the survey in February, including 353 stu- dents in Flathead County.
Released last week, the results shed a
light on teenage behavior in the 21st cen-
tury. For example, 13.1 percent of Mon-
percent said they had never had a drink, up from 17 percent in 1993.
Yet a higher percentage of students in Flathead County reported carrying a weapon last year compared to 2005, and the percentage of students reporting being forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to was also higher than 10 years ago.
