YAAK VALLEY
1. 524-Pound Male Grizzly Bear Captured, Released
Wildlife o cials relocated a 17-year- old male grizzly after it killed a domestic pig in the Yaak Valley.
Last week Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks o cials captured a 524-pound male grizzly in the Seventeen Mile Creek area of the Yaak. The homeowners alerted FWP of the incident and wildlife o cials loaned them an electri ed fence to secure all of their small livestock. A trap was set and the bear was captured four days later. The bear was GPS collared and relocated in the upper Pete Creek drainage in the Yaak the evening of Sept. 29, according toFWP.
FWP identi ed the bear as having been born in the Yaak in 1999. The bear was previously captured and collared for research purposes for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Cabinet-Yaak grizzly bear population monitoring program. The killing of the unsecured pig was this bear’s rst known con ict with people, according to FWP.
This is the rst grizzly bear to be cap- tured for management reasons in the Cabinet-Yaak grizzly bear population in 2016, FWP said.
FWP o cials encourage residents to use electric fencing to secure their small livestock from bears.
LIBBY
2. EPA Puts Hold ON Asbestos Resource Program Grant
The Environmental Protection Agency has put a temporary hold on payments to the Lincoln County City-County Board of Health for the Libby Asbestos Resource Program over concerns of how the federal money was being spent.
The federally funded, locally con- trolled Asbestos Resource Program o ers assistance to locals on how to deal with asbestos found in Lincoln County, home to one of the largest Superfund sites in American history. In 2012, a fed- eral grant was established to reimburse the program, and since then more than
$1.6 million has been withdrawn.
But earlier this year, local o cials real- ized that some of the federal money was being spent on legal fees, which might not be in accordance with the fund’s terms, according to Lincoln County Commis- sioner Mark Peck. After taking the con- cerns to EPA o cials in Denver, the fed- eral agency decided to put a hold on pay- ments until they determine if the money
can cover legal fees.
“We have some concerns about how
the fund has been managed,” said EPA Public A airs Specialist Jennifer Har- rison. “However, we want to continue the work being done by the Asbestos Resource Program because it is very important.”
Peck echoed the federal o cials’ desire to maintain the program in the future.
“Everyone is dedicated to keeping this program going,” Peck said.
Nick Raines, manager of the Asbestos Resource Program, said that although grant payments are on hold, the program has not been impacted and is operating as normal. Raines said local and federal o - cials are also looking at ways to maintain the grant into the future. As of right now, the current grant is expected to expire at the end of this year.
