LIBRARY CORNER
ISpy...aSpy
By APRIL VOMFELL ImagineIF Libraries
I can’t get enough stories about female spies during World War II. With so many men enlisted and on the front, England in particular turned to its women for espionage work. And with social norms and gender roles tem-
porarily suspended, women were doing some of the most dangerous jobs to help win the war.
To read or watch for yourself, try some of these.
Historical fiction: “Trapeze” by Simon Mawer. Young Marian becomes a silent killer, message encrypter and parachutist in occupied France.
Science fiction: “Blackout” and “All Clear” by Connie Willis. Time travel meets undercover work, with historical researchers as spies. It’s 2060, and Oxford students travel back to the 1940s to observe England during the war.
DVD: “The Bletchley Circle.” Four female codebreakers meet after the war to catch a serial killer – but in secret, because postwar society expects them to be content at home with housework and children.
Young adult fiction: “Code Name Verity” by Elizabeth Wein. Wireless operator “Verity” tells her story while being tortured by the Gestapo after crash-landing in France with her best friend, pilot Maddie. Suspense and danger are layered with friendship and inspiration.
Nonfiction: “A Life in Secrets” by Sarah Helm. Occupation: spymaster. Vera Atkins recruits and trains hundreds of agents for the British secret ser- vice, while her own life is cloaked in secrecy.
After spending some time with these ladies, you might start to behave like a spy yourself. Code name...?

One of the toughest challenges
in recovery is the rebuilding of relationships that are damaged. It is especially tough when the relationships are with our children who have been impacted by our addiction.
PARENTS IN RECOVERY GROUP is an 8 week, strength based program designed to support parents in establishing relationships based on love, trust, respect and consistency. Learning to parent from a place of health and strength, rather than guilt and shame. Developing the skills of parenting that are separate from the skills of recovery.
