LAUREL EDGES COLUMBIA FALLS TO WIN SOCCER TITLE
Laurel scored a pair of goals in the first half and held off Columbia Falls to win its first Class A girls soccer state championship 2-1 on Nov. 1.
Allie McGrath scored off an assist from Raquel Jimenez in the 31st minute and Jessica Elmer netted another score five minutes later.
Lottie Ellis scored Columbia Falls’ lone goal before half, but the Wildkats were unable to find the net again.
“We played flat. They played hard. They wanted it,” Columbia Falls head coach Greg Trenerry said.
Laurel took 15 shots on goal while Columbia Falls only managed four.
“They just peaked at the right mo- ment. They really wanted it and really believed in themselves,” said Laurel head coach Aloma Jess.
She added, “This means more than just a championship because it was against Columbia Falls. They are a qual- ity team and always have been.”
It was the second time in three years that the Wildkats played in the Class A championship match. The girls claimed their third Northern A conference title in four years, too.
Most historic was Columbia Falls’ victory in the semifinals, when the Wildkats stunned the six-time defend- ing state champs, Billings Central. Co- lumbia Falls won 3-2 and ended Billings Central’s 54-match unbeaten streak.
“We had a great season. It’s a jour- ney to get to this final. It’s never given to you,” Trenerry said. “They worked hard and did a great job. It just didn’t end up
quite like they wanted ... It was tough for them to get here, to go to Billings and winning and getting here was huge for them. That’s something they’ll always have. That’s history.”
VOLLEYBALL TEAMS PREP FOR STATE TOURNAMENTS
Glacier achieved another perfect regular season in volleyball, going 12-0 in Western AA and earning an automatic berth to the Class AA state tournament.
The Wolfpack (23-1 overall) earned a guaranteed bid to Bozeman, Nov. 13- 15 as the top seed in the West. The girls achieved a perfect conference record for the second consecutive season. The Wolfpack will play the No. 4 seed from the East at 2 p.m., Nov. 13.
Flathead (12-10, 6-6) hosts Helena (7-14, 4-8) in a playoff match to deter- mine which team advances to state. The Bravettes play at 6 p.m., Nov. 6, and will try to qualify for state for the 12th con- secutive season.
The Northwestern A Divisional Vol- leyball Tournament is in Libby, Nov. 7-8. Columbia Falls (12-1, 8-0) is the top seed and earns a first-round bye. No. 2 Libby (10-3, 5-3) plays No. 3 Frenchtown (7-7, 4-4) at 1 p.m., Friday. No. 4 Polson (6-7, 2-6) and No. 5 Whitefish (1-12, 1-7) play at 11 a.m., Thursday. The winner takes on Columbia Falls.
The top two teams from the division- al advance to the Class A state tourna- ment, Nov. 13-15 in Bozeman.
