DECEMBER 10, 2014 | 61 WINTER KEMPPAINEN
SCHOOL: Columbia Falls CLASS: Senior POSITION: Middle hitter
WINTER AND HER Wildkat teammates made a remarkable season even more memorable at the Class A volleyball state tournament. Columbia Falls won its first three matches before falling
in the semifinals to Belgrade. Instead
of bowing out, the girls fought back, beating Frenchtown in the third-place match and lining up a rematch with Belgrade in the championship. Colum- bia Falls won the first match, forcing a second contest against previously un- beaten Belgrade. It ended in Belgrade’s favor but not for a lack of effort on the Wildkats’ part. At the conclusion of the tournament, the girls had played six matches and 25 games in four days. Win- ter finished her standout senior season with 16 aces, 138 kills and 41 blocks, helping Columbia Falls win the confer- ence for the second year in a row and achieve a 19-3 overall record. There’s no time to rest for Winter, though. She’s now starting for the talented Wildkats basketball team with most of her volley- ball teammates.
