FLATHEAD LAKE
There’s a lake in Northwest Montana deeper than the Yellow Sea and the Persian Gulf. Bigger than Lake
Tahoe and every other freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. It’s clean, clear, and bright blue—a product of nearby Glacier National Park. Flathead Lake is a special place, and the people who live here know it.
ere are a handful of quaint towns nestled in the lake’s coves. Lakeside and Somers, neighbors on the northwest side of Flathead Lake, face the water on one side and Flathead National Forest lands on the other. Blacktail Mountain, a community ski area, is right in their back yard.
Across the lake is Bigfork. is town of 4,000 is famous for its cherries, but its popularity with tourists means that it can support a vibrant ne dining and arts culture.
Just north is Kalispell, the Flathead County seat. Kalispell, Montana’s sev- enth largest city, has an international air- port and state-of-the-art healthcare, as well as a diverse economy with options for entrepaneurs and small retailers.
Anchoring the southern section of Flathead Lake is the charming commu- nity of Polson. With sweeping views of the entire lake, looking north Polson is a springboard to many outdoor opportu- nities and epitomizes small-town charm.
In winter, when the lake freezes over, people ice skate, ice sh, Nordic and alpine ski, snowshoe, and snowmobile in the wilderness that stretches out in every direction. e region’s biggest ski area, White sh Mountain Resort, is a short drive north. Come summer, people swim, boat, and relax on public beaches or private docks.
Life here revolves around the lake. How could it not when you live on such a beautiful body of water?
