BIGFORK GIRLS CLAIM DISTRICT TROPHY, ADVANCE TO DIVISIONAL
Lana Berg scored 13 points, Katie Thomas had 11 and the Bigfork Valkyries defeated Plains 50-38 on Saturday to win the District 7B championship.
Riley Coleman and Miranda Camp- bell each had eight points for the Vals (16-4 overall).
The Western B Divisional Basketball boys and girls tournaments are at Flat- head High School, Feb. 25-28. The top two teams from each bracket will ad- vance to the Class B state tournament in Great Falls, March 12-14.
In the girls bracket, Ronan plays Troy at 1 p.m., Wednesday in the opener. Deer Lodge takes on Plains at 2:45 p.m. Bigfork plays Florence at 6 p.m. Thomp- son Falls and Missoula Loyola play at 7:45 p.m.
The championship game is at 9:15 p.m., Friday.
In the boys bracket, Bigfork plays Ronan at 11:20 a.m., Thursday. Eureka takes on Florence at 1 p.m. Loyola plays Plains at 4 p.m. and Deer Lodge and Thompson Falls clash at 5:45 p.m.
The championship game is at 8:45 p.m., Saturday.
FULLER RETURNS TO COACH VOLLEYBALL AT WHITEFISH
Jackie Fuller has been named the head volleyball coach at Whitefish High School, resuming a role she had for sev- eral years.
Fuller led Whitefish to a 324-102 re- cord, 13 state tournament appearances and state championships in 2001, 2002, and three straight from 2004 to 2006. The 2007 team finished second. She re- signed in 2011.
Fuller has coached volleyball for 22 seasons and posted a 427-133 record. At Shelby, she posted a 103-31 record, win- ning the state Class B title in 1988.
Fuller will replace Sarah Scott, who resigned last month as head coach of the volleyball team after four seasons. The Bulldogs were 24-40 under Scott.
Fuller also serves as assistant princi- pal at Whitefish.
NORTHWESTERN A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS TIP OFF IN WHITEFISH
Whitefish High School is hosting this week’s Northwestern A divisional bas- ketball tournaments, Feb. 26-28.
On the boys side, defending state champ Columbia Falls is the top team in the division with a 15-3 overall record. The Wildcats were a perfect 8-0 in con- ference this season. The team, which
is chasing its seventh consecutive di- vision crown, earned a first-round bye and plays its first game at 3 p.m., Fri- day. Columbia Falls will play the winner of Frenchtown (7-11) and Libby (2-16), which tip off at 6 p.m., Thursday.
Whitefish (8-10) and Polson (8-10) also earned byes and play each other at 4:30 p.m., Friday.
The divisional championship game is at 6 p.m., Saturday.
The Class A boys state tournament is March 12-14 in Bozeman.
Ty Morgan, a senior for Colum- bia Falls, leads the division in scoring with 19.28 points per game on average. Frenchtown’s Bridger Truett is averag- ing 19 ppg. Polson’s Matthew Rensvold is averaging 13 ppg and Columbia Falls’ Grant Wallace is averaging 12.39 ppg.
In the girls bracket, Columbia Falls (17-1) is the top seed with a first-round bye. The Wildkats, the reigning division champs, play at 6 p.m., Friday, against the winner of Polson (2-16) and White- fish (2-16), which tip off at 7:30 p.m., Thursday. Libby (9-9) plays Frenchtown (12-6) at 7:30 p.m., Friday.
The divisional championship game is at 7:30 p.m., Saturday.
The Class A girls state tournament is March 5-7 in Hamilton.
Ciera Finberg, a senior for Columbia Falls, is the top scorer in the division, averaging 13.56 points per game. Team- mate Winter Kemppainen is next at 11 ppg.

WOLVERINES QUALIFY FOR HOCKEY PLAYOFFS
The Whitefish Wolverines junior hockey team clinched the No. 4 seed in the Western States Hockey League divi- sional standings, guaranteeing a playoff appearance for the first-year club.
The first playoff round will be held at Stumptown Ice Den in Whitefish, March 6 – 8. It will be a two out of three format. The Wolverines will likely play either Butte or Seattle.
The Wolverines are 17-27-1 in the di- vision. Whitefish picked up an impres- sive victory earlier this month, defeating the Idaho Steelheads 6-1. Idaho is the top team in the league and one of the top junior hockey teams in the nation. The loss to Whitefish was the team’s first de- feat in regulation time in 36 games.
The regular season finale is Feb. 27 when Whitefish travels to Missoula to take on the Maulers (33-9).
