WAG Race Returns for Seventh Year
Get the leash ready and head to Hugh Rogers Wag Park in White sh this week- end for the seventh annual Wag Race. This dog-friendly event on May 15 is an annual favorite and features a 15K, 4-mile and one-mile run that starts and nishes at the dog park, which has been dubbed one of the 10 best dog parks in the nation, according to USA Today. Chris Finberg Selected As Columbia Falls Boys Basketball Coach
Chris Finberg is the new head coach of the boys basketball team at his alma mater, Columbia Falls High School.
Finberg, a former standout athlete in Columbia Falls and the nephew of for- mer boys head coach Cary Finberg, was o ered the position and accepted last week. Activities Director Troy Bowman con rmed the hire, which is pending approval by the school board.
Finberg is replacing John Anderson, who resigned in March after one season. Anderson stepped down claiming a “toxic environment” surrounded the program and that a school o cial made a disdain- ful comment about his wife. Bowman and Columbia Falls High School Princi- pal Scott Gaiser said at the time they were both unaware of the allegations or any concerns Anderson might have had about negativity surrounding the program.
Under Anderson, the Wildcats nished 4-17 overall last season and failed to qual- ify for the state tournament for the rst time since 2008.
Finberg brings a strong pedigree to a program with a rich tradition as one of the best in Montana in recent decades. Cary Finberg helmed the program for 19 seasons and guided the Wildcats to ve Class A championships and seven con- secutive top-three nishes at the state
tournament from 2009-2015. He stepped down with a career record of 298-138 as the boys head coach.
Chris Finberg previously served as an assistant coach under his uncle, Cary, who remains the head coach of the girls team at Columbia Falls. Chris Finberg graduated from Columbia Falls High School and attended Miles Com- munity College in Miles City, where he played basketball before nishing up an education degree in health and human performance at the University of Mon- tana-Western in Dillon.
Class B Golfers Prep for State Tournament
Libby freshman Ryggs Johnston and other Class B golfers will pursue state trophies at the upcoming championship tournaments.
Huntley is hosting the boys state tour- nament at Pryor Creek Golf Course while Billings is holding the girls state tourney at Eaglerock Golf Course, May 17-18.
Johnston, one of the top young golfers in the West, is a top contender for indi- vidual honors at the boys tournament. The Libby freshman red an 8-under 64 at Trestle Creek Golf Course last week to win the St. Regis Invitational. In late April, he set a tournament record at the Thompson Falls Invitational at River’s Bend Golf Course, shooting a 68. He was one stroke shy of the course record.
Reigning state champ Joey Peter, a senior at Manhattan, is back to defend his title as a top contender, along with Big- fork senior Joseph Potkonjak, who tied for second a year ago. Peter won a year ago at Eaglerock with 68-77—145. Potkonjak shot 76-73—149. Thompson Falls is the reigning team champion after slightly edging Manhattan a year ago. Bigfork tied for third as a team last year.
On the girls side, last year’s champ, Missoula Loyola’s Sadie Crippen, has graduated, leaving the top spot up for grabs. Loyola won last year’s team title.
