MONTANA LIFESTYLES
Why We Treasure the Treasure State
By JUSTIN MECCIA
Recently, I read the results of a 2013 Gallup poll
that asked residents of all 50 states, “is the state you
live in one of the best possible states to live in?” Over-
all, Gallup did ind that 46 percent of the residents of
each state, on average, ranked their own state as No.
1. However, I just had to know, which state took the
crown?
Montana!
Yes, 77 percent of people polled in Montana ranked
the “406 state” as the best U.S. state to live in. Alaska
and Utah followed Montana and were the only other
states to have at least seven out of 10 rank their home
state as numero uno.
Gallup polling did notice interesting trends, such as
among the top-10 states chosen, all, with the exception
of one (Texas) are low population states. Another trend
worth mentioning is that only two of the top-10 states
are in the East: Vermont and New Hampshire, and, in-
terestingly, eight of these states are in colder climates,
with the warmer two being Hawaii and Texas. I did per-
sonally ind it interesting that California, Oregon and
Washington were not among the top 10 — either they
didn’t interview residents along Highway 101, or the
U.S. is not as impressed with the West Coast these days.
Nonetheless, as interesting as I found this to be, I
do believe it’s a bit inconclusive to stop the discussion
there. Perhaps the residents of Montana are proud of SHUTTERSTOCK PHOTO
their state because of all the access we have — and the
fact that we aren’t afraid to not charge people for it.
And, unlike the East Coast beaches (trust me, I day hike in the Jewell Basin, or a drive to Libby to walk
