TRACK WAS A SPORT THAT JESS

treated lightly at irst. But then he
started jumping this spring, and it
sparked a competitive pursuit that
led him all the way to the Class AA
state meet. “I went out there at the
start to have fun with my friends

and I guess I found something I
have a talent for,” he says. At the
Archie Roe Invitational, he landed
the longest triple jump in Mon-
tana all season — 45 feet. His best

long jump — 21-9 — ranked second
in the state. Appearing at his irst
state meet, he rose to the occasion
and won the triple jump champion-
ship by four inches, giving Flathead
its second consecutive state champ

in the event. Jess is now hoping to
ride the momentum into the fall
football season.

STATS THAT MATTER:

• Jess leaped 44 feet, 9
inches to win the Class AA
championship in triple jump.
He also placed fifth in the

long jump, landing 20-6
