TROY
1. Woman Denies Sending Loaded Gun to Tester
A 56-year-old Troy woman has been accused of trying to send a loaded gun to Sen. Jon Tester’s office in Washington, D.C.
On June 29, Cathleen Roselyn Cant- lon pleaded not guilty to charges of inter- state mailing of a firearm and ammuni- tion and possession of a firearm by a per- son who has been committed to a mental institution.
According to court documents, U.S. Capitol Police received a report of a suspi- cious package on May 18 at the U.S. Senate mailing facility in Landover, Maryland. The package was addressed to “Home land Security and Sentoe Johns Tester.” The package’s return address was listed as Kootenai Drug True Value in Troy.
Capitol Police technicians examined the package and found it had a loaded .22 handgun, a knife, can of pepper spray and 53 rounds of ammunition. It also had miscellaneous papers and mail. During the investigation a second package from Troy was found in the mail facility that contained an envelope with “Hazard Contaminated/Dirty Bomb” written on the side. In one of the packages there was a letter signed by Cantlon. In the letter to Tester, she wrote about mental health issues and the banking system.
Upon further investigation, law enforcement learned that the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Office had seized two weapons from Cantlon in October 2014. However, the weapons were later returned to her and those ended up being the same she tried to send to Tester.
U.S. Capitol Police requested that Lin- coln County sheriff’s deputies interview Cantlon and on May 19 they visited her in Troy. Upon arriving at her home, Cantlon told the officers, “It’s none of your [exple- tive] business – get off my property.”
Cantlon appeared in federal court in Missoula on June 29. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
POLSON
2. Canadian Man Pleads Not Guilty to Montana Drug Charges
A Canadian man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he had nearly 100 pounds of cocaine in his pickup truck while trav- eling through northwestern Montana.
KERR-AM reports 22-year-old Miguel Douglas Miranda of Calgary, Alberta, entered his plea to criminal possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute during a District Court hearing in Polson on July 2.
Court records say a Montana Highway Patrol trooper who stopped Miranda on U.S. Highway 93 near St. Ignatius on June 4 found the cocaine in a hidden compart- ment in the bed of the truck. Prosecutors estimate its street value at $1.4 million.
Prosecutors and defense attorney Milt Datsopoulos believe the case will be moved to federal court so a trial date was not set.
Miranda remains jailed in Lake County on $1 million bond.
RONAN
3. Fireworks Cause Blaze at Area Shop, Apartment
A young boy playing with fireworks started a fire east of Ronan that caused $250,000 in damage to a shop and apartment.
Ronan Fire Chief Mark Clary tells KERR-AM that firefighters were called at about 3:30 p.m. on June 30, about the time emergency services coordinators were issuing an emergency declaration to prohibit the use of fireworks due to the recent hot, dry weather.
Clary says a 5- or 6-year-old boy admitted throwing fireworks into a bush. The fire spread to a large shop that also contained an apartment. The renters escaped through the windows. Clary says it appears they lost all of their belongings in the fire.
No one was injured.
