BOULDER, SNOW TUMBLE ONTO SUN ROAD ON OPENING NIGHT
Park employees responded to a fallen boulder on the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the night of July 2, and motorists are being reminded to drive with care along the newly opened thoroughfare.
At roughly 10:30 p.m., park dispatch received a report of a large pile of snow and a very large boulder blocking the west-bound lane of the road approxi- mately 1.5 miles west of Logan Pass. No injuries or damage were reported.
Park road crew members removed the snow and boulder by 1:30 a.m. on July 3. The boulder was estimated to be approximately 800 pounds.
The Sun Road was opened to vehicle access to Logan Pass at 8 p.m. July 2.
Travelers along the road are remind- ed to drive with care, spokesperson De- nise Germann said. Standing or walking on snow along the road is strongly dis- couraged, as is parking or stopping in ar- eas of snow located above the road.
There are vehicle size restrictions on the Sun Road. Vehicles, and vehicle com- binations, longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet are prohibited between Ava- lanche Campground and Rising Sun. Ve- hicles over 10 feet in height are not ad- vised to travel west from Logan Pass.
LAKE COUNTY OFFICERS SEEK INFO ON MISSING WOMAN
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a missing Pablo woman who was last seen nearly two weeks ago at her home in Pablo.
Detectives have opened a missing persons case for Shannon Turner, 40. She is described as a white female who is 5-foot-4 with brown curly hair and green eyes. She was last seen at 8:30 a.m., June 30 at her residence in Pablo.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Dis- patch received a call requesting a wel- fare check Turner at her residence. Dep- uties were unsuccessful in locating her or her vehicle.
Detectives are asking for the pub- lic’s help in locating Turner. She was last seen driving a 2006 maroon Chevy Up- lander SUV/van with Montana license plate ARG 175.
Anyone spotting either Turner or her vehicle is asked to contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at 883-7301.
POLSON MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO RAPE, STALKING
A Polson man who was charged with trying to hire someone to kill his former girlfriend so she couldn’t testify against him in a rape trial has entered a plea agreement that calls for a 50-year prison
sentence.
Dennis Hobbs, 56, pleaded guilty
July 2 to two counts of rape, stalking and tampering with witnesses. Under the plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss charges of solicitation of deliberate ho- micide and assault with a weapon.
Both the prosecution and defense agreed to recommend Hobbs be sen- tenced to 50 years in prison, with no time suspended. District Judge James Manley scheduled sentencing for Aug. 27.

FEDS DOUBT GLOBAL WARMING’S IMPACT ON WOLVERINES
A top federal wildlife official says there’s too much uncertainty about cli- mate change to prove it threatens the snow-loving wolverine — overruling agency scientists who warned of im- pending habitat loss.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Re- gional Director Noreen Walsh said there’s no doubt that the wolverine’s high-mountain habitat is getting warm- er.
But she said any assumptions about how that will change snowfall patterns are based on “speculation.”
Her comments were contained in a May 30 memo obtained by the Center for Biological Diversity. Fish and Wild- life Service spokesman Chris Tollefson confirmed the memo was from Walsh.
Federal biologists last year proposed Endangered Species Act protections for an estimated 250-300 wolverines in the Lower 48 states. Larger populations per- sist in Alaska and Canada.
A final decision is due in early August.
JUDGE BLOCKS LOGGING PROJECT
A federal judge has blocked a logging project in the Kootenai National Forest over concerns that roads built for the project may harm a threatened popula- tion of grizzly bears.
In approving the 36,600-acre Pil- grim project, the U.S. Forest Service called for installing gates on some of the planned roads that would allow future access.
U.S. District Judge Dana Chris- tensen ruled July 1 the forest’s manage- ment plan requires officials to perma- nently close the roads once the logging project is completed, or else close other roads in the area.
Christensen blocked the project un- til the Forest Service comes up with a plan for no net increase in road miles.
The Alliance for the Wild Rockies sued the Forest Service over the project last year.
