CAMPAIGN WATCH: CANDIDATES FILE FUNDRAISING REPORTS
Last week largely has been about the numbers as candidates filed second- quarter fundraising reports and infor- mation came out about their personal assets. Here’s a look at the week’s most interesting and important develop- ments in Montana’s election campaigns:
FOREST MANAGEMENT “MIS- UNDERSTANDING”
Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Daines was one of more than two dozen repre- sentatives who signed a letter to House Speaker John Boehner last week urg- ing him to reject proposals in the Senate that “address forest management prob- lems for only a few select locations, while leaving the rest of our communities be- hind.” That riled his opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Sen. John Walsh, and Sen. John Tester, who say the letter goes against Tester’s bills addressing forestry management specifically in Montana. Daines spokeswoman Alee Lockman told the Bozeman Chronicle that there was a misunderstanding over the letter and that “Steve does not oppose seeking state-specific forest policies.”
FUNDRAISING NUMBERS RE- PORTED
Daines reported raising more than $1.4 million in the past three months in his fight to unseat Walsh, a Democrat, in the November election. Daines also said he’s raised a total of $3.6 million. Walsh announced last week his campaign has raised $1.25 million for the period from April 1 to June 30 and nearly $2.8 mil- lion overall. Daines reportedly has $1.7 million cash on hand, while Walsh said he has $713,000. Democratic U.S. House candidate John Lewis reported raising $337,000 in the second quarter, while his opponent, Republican Ryan Zinke, reported raising nearly $700.000. The Lewis campaign has about $623,000 in the bank, while Zinke’s campaign has about $97,000.
PERSONAL ASSETS: DAINES WEALTHIEST MONTANA MEM- BER OF CONGRESS
Recently filed financial-disclosure forms show Daines is the wealthiest Montanan in Congress with personal assets worth between $8.9 million and $32.7 million. In contrast, Walsh report- ed assets of $66,000 to $165,000. Mem- bers of Congress and candidates for fed- eral office must file annual financial-dis- closure forms. Statements said Zinke’s personal wealth ranges from $1.1 million to $2.5 million in value. Lewis reported personal assets worth between $66,000 and $165,000.
DEMOCRATS SEEK ZINKE’S
MILITARY RECORDS
Montana Democrats said last week they are asking for Zinke’s military re- cords under the Freedom of Informa- tion Act. In response, Zinke said he has released some military records to the media and that he is proud of them. Democratic Party officials say the re- quest stems from allegations that Zinke misused taxpayer dollars for personal travel. Zinke said the disputed travel claimwasfora$211planetickettoMon- tana when he was a junior officer. He said he paid the money back.

BABY BOY DELIVERED ON BUS NEAR POLSON
A Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Transit bus boarded an extra pas- senger on Tuesday morning after a Lake County sheriff’s deputy and two Tribal Clinic workers in Elmo helped deliver a healthy baby boy on the side of the road.
Shortly after 9 a.m. on July 15, dis- patch received a 911 call about a woman in her 30s who had gone into labor while riding the tribal transit bus in Elmo, ac- cording to the Lake County Sheriff’s Of- fice.
A few minutes after the call, Depu- ty Scott Sciaretta arrived on the scene to find that the baby was already on his way, legs first. With the help of a pas- senger, Gigi Cave, Sciarette began to de- liver the baby, while Lake County Dis- patchers radioed instructions on how to birth a child. Meanwhile, two staff mem- bers from the Tribal Clinic, Lee Anna Muzquiz and Jennifer Morigeau, arrived and helped turn the baby and complete the delivery.

STUDY SAYS NATIONAL PARKS BOOST ECONOMY IN WEST
National parks and monuments boosted the economies of surrounding communities in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho by a combined $1.15 billion last year, according to a new study.
Wyoming saw $723.3 million in spending by visitors to parks and monu- ments run by the National Park Service; Montana, $397.3 million; and Idaho, $29.4 million.
On July 18, the National Park Service released a report that says spending on hotels, restaurants, gas and supplies by visitors to U.S. national parks in 2013 contributed $14.6 billion in economic benefits to communities within 60 miles of the parks nationwide.
More than 2 million visited Glacier National Park, spending more than $178 million.
