Pass and follows a cliff side with a steep drop-off on one side, traversing the west slope of the Continental Divide.
A series of handrails offer something for hikers to hold on to as they make their way along the cliff.
Those handrails are actually old gar- den hoses. This project will replace those worn hoses.
“It won’t be a hose anymore,” German said.
Instead, hundreds of feet of cable will be used. Some of the anchors for the cable will be replaced as well.
The project will also reconstruct the first quarter mile of the trail, including work on some switchbacks that have eroded over the years.
It also includes the trailhead, which has widened over the years as visitors have wandered off trail.
Crews will also work at stabilizing and widening the narrow section of trail in the Rimrock area.
Work on the project will begin in early September, and the trail won’t be closed during reconstruction.
Glacier plans to work with Montana Conservation Corps, which recruits youth to do trail work, for the project.
The project comes with a $40,000 price tag. The Glacier National Park Conservancy contributed $20,000 for the project, which was matched with National Park Service Centennial Cost Share funds.
Almost 3,000 hikers per week make their way along the Highline Trail.

4. Injured Hikers Rescued Above Avalanche Lake
Search crews successfully located two hikers who went missing and were injured in Glacier National Park, accord- ing to the National Park Service.
The two female hikers were reported missing early Monday morning after not returning from a day hike Sunday.
Aerial search efforts located the two hikers late Monday on a cliff face above Avalanche Lake. The Two Bear Air Res- cue helicopter hoisted the two women out of the area at approximately 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning once daylight had arrived and the weather had improved. Both hikers had sustained leg injuries as a result of a fall.
Park staff provided initial treatment. The hikers were transported to the hos- pital for more definitive care.
The two women are employees in the Science and Resource Management Divi- sion at Glacier National Park, according to the NPS.
Search efforts were launched Monday morning with more than 40 park staff and others assisting and were focused in the area between Logan Pass and Sperry Chalet. A storm had moved through the area Sunday evening, resulting in inclem- ent weather and limited visibility in a high alpine area that includes rock cliffs, wet and slippery rocks and boulders, and dense vegetation.
The hikers had planned ahead and were prepared with proper footwear, clothing and equipment. They travelled
as a pair. They were experienced hikers and were prepared for the challenging terrain. They also left their planned itin- erary with someone, which greatly aided in timely search and rescue response.

5. Lawsuit: Kerr Dam Transfer to Tribes is Security Risk
A lawsuit seeking to block the transfer of a Montana dam to two Native Ameri- can tribes makes the unusual assertion that the transfer could lead the Turkish government to seek raw nuclear mate- rials on U.S. soil to blow up the dam or other targets.
Turkey is an American ally, a mem- ber of NATO and has been key partner in the U.S. counterterrorism efforts in the Middle East, according to the U.S. State Department. The nonprofit Nuclear Threat Initiative says Turkey is active in nuclear proliferation prevention efforts and is a member of all major treaties gov- erning the acquisition and use of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
Advocates for U.S.-Turkish relations called the lawsuit’s claims false, obnox- ious and “pure ugly.”
The lawsuit filed by state Sen. Bob Keenan, former state Sen. Verdell Jack- son and Pointer Scenic Cruises seeks an emergency order to block the Sept. 5 transfer of the Kerr dam from North- Western Energy to the tribes on Mon- tana’s Flathead Indian Reservation.
U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras did not make an immediate decision on the request following a hearing Friday in Washington, D.C.
Part of the lawsuit contends the Fed- eral Energy Regulatory Commission should hold hearings on the Confeder- ated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ ability to safely operate the dam, but a large por- tion of the suit claims national security concerns should prevent the transfer.
Its assertions are rooted in the efforts of the Turkish government and Turk- ish-American organizations to establish business and cultural exchanges with Native Americans.
Keenan, Jackson and Pointer, through their lawyer, Lawrence Kogan, suggest the Turkish government may be seeking to “to more freely promote their brand of Islam on reservations and/or to pursue other potentially more dangerous activi- ties.” Those other activities could include seeking access to uranium deposits and water sources to produce yellowcake for use in bombs, and to tap into the tribes’ expertise in cleaning up uranium mill tailings to help them, the lawsuit said.
“It is quite possible that the Turkish government, sponsored Turkish busi- ness enterprises, and affiliated terrorist groups or members may be seeking access to such expertise for possible acquisition and use of incendiary devices to compro- mise Kerr dam and/or other off-reserva- tion targets,” the lawsuit says.
The lawsuit provides no factual basis for making its assertions against the U.S. ally. G. Lincoln McCurdy, president of the Turkish Council of America, called the lawsuit’s assertions completely false.
