EXPLORE TALLY LAKE
BY JUSTIN FRANZ
THE DAYS ARE GETTING shorter and Glacier National Park’s iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road is officially closed for the season. Those two facts mean only one thing in Northwest Montana: Autumn is in full swing. But just because the summer days in Glacier Park are behind us doesn’t mean you should hunker down until the snow falls. In fact, fall offers a great opportunity to explore some great local spots you may have overlooked during the busy tourist season. One of the best is Tally Lake west of Whitefish.
The 1,326-acre body of water in the Flathead National Forest is also the deep- est lake in Montana, reaching a depth of 492 feet. The lake features a campground and day use area that is perfect for a pic- nic. You can also launch your boat or kayak for a late-season float. There are also numerous hiking trails that sur- round the lake.
How to get there: From downtown Whitefish, take U.S. 93 north four miles and turn south on Twin Bridges Road. Travel 1.4 miles and turn right at the Tally Lake sign. After one mile, turn left on Farm to Market Road. After two miles turn right at the Tally Lake sign onto Tally Lake Road. Go nine miles to the campground sign.
