Nicholson Scores Game-Winner in Overtime, Sending Whitefish to Semis
Haley Nicholson added another high- light to a stellar season in the quarterfi- nals of the Class A girls soccer playoffs on Oct.17.
The Whitefish junior scored two goals, including the game-winning score in overtime off an assist by Pixie Moore to help the Bulldogs defeat Frenchtown 4-3.
The Bulldogs (10-3-1) advance to the state semifinals and will play Billings Central (10-0-1) on the road on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at Rocky Mountain College. Billings Central defeated Corvallis in the quarterfinals 5-1. Whitefish defeated Polson 2-1 on Oct. 13 in a play-in match.
Nicholson has 30 goals this season, tied for most in the state with French- town’s Abbey Teagle.
In other playoff action, Laurel elimi- nated Columbia Falls 3-1 on Oct. 17. Lau- rel (6-4-1) hosts Hamilton (12-1) in the other semifinal match on Oct. 24. Ham- ilton beat Belgrade 2-1.
Billings Centrals Ousts Polson Boys from Soccer Quarterfinals
The Billings Central Rams were too much for Polson, eliminating the Pirates 3-1 in the Class A boys soccer playoffs on Oct.17.
Billings Central (9-2) will take on Corvallis (12-1) at 1 p.m., Oct. 24 in Bill- ings. Corvallis ousted Livingston, 3-0.
Missoula Loyola eliminated Libby 2-1 on Oct. 17 in other playoff action. Loyola (6-6) will play Belgrade (11-1-1) in the semifinals.
Glacier Boys Host as Class AA Soccer Playoffs Commence
The Glacier boys will host a playoff match on Friday, Oct. 23 for a berth to the Class AA state soccer tournament.
The Wolfpack (12-6-5) will host the winner of Missoula Big Sky (1-10-1) and Helena Capital (2-8-2). Those teams played on Oct. 20 after the Beacon went to print.
Glacier’s match on Friday is at 2 p.m.
The Flathead boys (3-4-5) will travel to Missoula to play Sentinel (5-5-2) in a playoff match at 4 p.m., Oct. 22.
Last year’s state runner-ups, Mis- soula Hellgate (11-1), earned an automatic bid by winning the Western AA division and Helena (8-3-1) also earned a bye to state by placing second.
The Class AA state tournament is in Billings, Oct. 29-31.
In the Eastern division, Billings Senior (12-0) earned the top seed and an automatic trip to state along with sec- ond place Bozeman (10-2), which is the defending state champ.
Billings Skyview (7-4-1) plays the winner of Great Falls (1-9-2) and Butte
(0-11-1) in playoff action and Great Falls C.M. Russell (4-6-2) plays Billings West (4-6-2).
Glacier, Flathead Girls Hit the Road for Soccer Playoffs
Both Glacier and Flathead are on the roadthisweekinpursuitofticketstothe Class AA girls state soccer tournament.
The Wolfpack (1-9-2) played at Mis- soula Hellgate (3-7-2) on Oct. 20 after the Beacon went to print. The winner plays at Missoula Big Sky (6-4-2) on Oct. 22.
The Bravettes (3-7-2) play at Helena Capital (3-5-4) on Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. The winner advances to state.
Helena (10-0-2) won the Western AA and earned an automatic bid, along with second place Missoula Sentinel (8-2-2).
Bozeman (9-2-1), last year’s state run- ner-ups, won the Eastern division and earned an automatic trip to state. Billings West (7-2-3) placed second and got a bye, too.
Great Falls (2-10) hosted Butte (0-12) on Oct. 20 and the winner takes on Bill- ings Senior (7-3-2). Great Falls C.M. Rus- sell (7-5), the defending state champs, hosts Billings Skyview (6-4-2) on Oct. 22.
The girls state tournament is Oct. 29-31 in Billings.
Whitefish Secures Conference Title as Football Playoffs Approach
The high school football regular sea- son is coming to a climactic ending as local teams jockey for positioning.
The Whitefish Bulldogs (7-1 overall, 3-0 in conference) have locked up the Northwestern A conference title and a guaranteed playoff seed. The Bulldogs banked Frenchtown 45-0 last Friday. Whitefish hosts Hamilton at 7 p.m., Oct. 23 in the final regular season game.
Columbia Falls (3-3, 1-1) travels to Frenchtown (3-5, 0-2) on Friday for a pivotal regular-season finale. The Wild- cats defeated Polson 35-26 last week. The Pirates (3-4, 1-2) host Havre on Oct. 23.
In Class AA, Glacier defeated Butte 46-6 last week to improve to 6-2 and move into third place in the standings.
The Wolfpack play crosstown rival Flathead (5-3) in a can’t-miss showdown on Friday night inside Legends Stadium. Helena Capital edged Flathead 24-21 last week and the Braves sit in sixth place in the AA standings.
Glacier travels to Missoula Big Sky Oct. 30 in the final game of the regular season. Flathead hosts Missoula Senti- nel Oct. 30 in the finale.
In Class B action, Bigfork defeated Eureka 32-14. The Vikings (4-3, 2-1) host Troy (2-5, 2-1) in a pivotal regular-sea- son finale and Western 7B conference matchup on Oct. 23.
