Kalispell Resident Anders Inducted into Helena Legion Hall of Fame
Longtime Kalispell resident Doug Anders was recently inducted into the Helena Senators Legion baseball Hall of Fame.
A four-sport athlete for Helena Cathedral High who graduated in 1965, Anders is just one of seven Senators that went on to play minor league baseball. A three-year Helena Legion member from 1963-65, he batted over .300 twice, win- ning the Earl Tucker Trophy as team bat- ting champ in 1964. He played shortstop his nal two seasons, and in 1965, he led the team in four o ensive categories. Also among his accolades were 10 varsity letters for the Helena Greenies; all-con- ference selections in both football and basketball; and the 1964 Helena Quar- terback’s Club’s “Athlete of the Month” award.
Anders went on to play both basket- ball and baseball for Gonzaga University, where he was a four-year starter on the diamond for the Zags at third base. He was a two-time All-Conference selection; All-Big Sky and All-West Coast. In 1969, Anders was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 24th round, and played one season for the Salt Lake City Bees in the Class A Pioneer League.
Anders has made his home in the Kalispell area since the late 1980s.

Kalispell’s Reed Medals at Pan American Cup in Taekwondo
Taylor Reed, a 19-year-old Kalispell resident and national champion in tae- kwondo, recently earned a bronze medal at the Pan American World Taekwondo President’s Cup in Portland, Oregon.
Reed took bronze in the sport side of the men’s division. The top-three place marked a signi cant achievement for the local athlete, who has his sights set on competing at the Olympic Trials in two years.
Reed won his second national champi- onship in July, this time in the men’s divi- sion against adults. He previously won a national title in the junior division.
Reed said his goal is to continue to compete at elite events to gain points that will help his standing in the future orga- nization of the U.S. Olympic team. His next competition is in Reno in February.
“It’s huge to be able to get to these events and compete at the international level,” he said. “It’s pretty exciting to see the hard work pay o .”
Glacier Grads Thiebes, Hill Earn Honors from Griz, Bobcats
A pair of standout football players from the Flathead Valley nished their seasons with honors for the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats.
Jackson Thiebes, a Glacier High School graduate and a redshirt senior at Montana, was named the program’s most outstanding o ensive lineman of the year. Thiebes was a walk-on player who was cut and then successfully walked on for the Griz. He then became an anchor for the team’s o ensive line.
Last weekend, Josh Hill, another for- mer standout for Glacier and a freshman linebacker for the Bobcats, led Mon- tana State’s defense with eight tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. The Bobcats defeated Montana 24-17 as both teams nished the regular season out of the FCS playo s.
Hill earned ROOT Sports Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors as well as a STATS FCS Honorable Mention Freshman of the Week award.
The Grizzlies season ended at 6-5 overall and 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference The Bobcats nished 4-7 and 2-6.
Morley Places 43rd at NCAA XC Nationals
Makena Morley, a former state cham- pion from Bigfork and a sophomore at the University of Colorado, placed 43rd at the NCAA Division I cross country national championships last weekend in Indiana.
Morley nished the 6K race in 20:27.6. The former Bigfork standout was the sixth nisher for the Bu aloes, which placed third as a team.
On the men’s side, former Flathead state champ Zach Perrin, a junior for Col- orado, placed 125th, clocking 31:04.7 for the 6.21-mile race. The Colorado men n- ished sixth as a team.
Flathead’s Bouma Signs to Run for CSU-Pueblo
Nicole Bouma, a senior at Flathead High School, has verbally committed to run at the University of Colorado-Pueblo next year.
Bouma has been a standout distance runner at Flathead in recent years and will join other former local runners for the nationally ranked CSU-Pueblo.
Last week, the CSU-Pueblo men’s cross country team recorded the pro- gram’s third top-10 nish at the Division II national championships in Florida, while the women’s squad competed in its rst appearance at the national champi- onship event. The women nished 16th.
Junior Derrick Williams, a former state champ from Columbia Falls, had to drop out of the men’s race due to an injury. Freshman Gillian Maness of Kalispell nished 119th (22:31.4) and senior Bailey Hughes of Bigfork was 149th (22:51.8).
