Belly dancer teaches class in Kalispell, Whitefish

By Beacon Staff

One of the Northwest’s top belly dance instructors will be in Kalispell June 9-10.

Jane Archer, of Portland, Oregon, will teach and perform at the KM Building in Kalispell. Produced by local belly dance teacher Marti Kurth, the two-day workshop will feature Archer teaching her signature style called Neo-Tribal Belly Dance. The style incorporates movements from the modern belly dance genre with traditional folk dance rhythms and authentic steps.

Registration for the Saturday workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. with classes from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday’s workshop will focus on specific rhythms and dances of Turkey and Roma dances. It will be held beginning at noon at the Shape Up studio for women in the Mountain Mall in Whitefish.

The public is invited to “Oriental Night” at the KM Theater on June 9 at 8 p.m. featuring Archer and other dancers from the Flathead Valley, Missoula and Helena. Live drummers will perform authentic Middle Eastern rhythms and dancers from the audience will have an opportunity to take the stage. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and beverage service will be available from Red’s Wines and Blues.

Cost of the workshop is $85 and includes the evening show. “Oriental Night” tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Drop-in students will be accepted for $30 per class only if space is available. Call Kurth at 862-3608 for information.
