Montana Drops to No. 3 in Poll

By Beacon Staff

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Montana fell to No. 3 this week in The Sports Networks’ top 25 poll in the Football Championship Series Division.

Montana was No. 2 last week, and this week is trading places with last week’s No. 3, Massachusetts.

Montana defeated Southern Utah 37-17 on Saturday.

And it comes as no surprise that Appalachian State was the unanimous choice for No. 1 in what used to be called Division I-AA. The Mountaineers received all 88 first-place votes after knocking off No. 5 Michigan 34-32. It was the first time an FCS team beat an Associated Press Top-25 team. Appalachian is the two-time defending FCS national champion.

Rounding out the top five are North Dakota, which remains at No. 4; and New Hampshire at No. 5.

Two other Big Sky teams are in the poll this week: Portland State at No. 18 and Montana State at No. 21.
