Trego Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash Near Olney

By Beacon Staff

KALISPELL (AP) – A Corvette and a pickup truck collided nearly head-on on Montana 93 north of Olney, killing the driver of the car, the Montana Highway Patrol said.

Michael Stearns, 67, died at the scene of the crash Wednesday morning, said Flathead County Deputy Coroner Dorothy Browder.

The driver of the pickup, a man in his late 60s, was hospitalized in intensive care late Wednesday.

The patrol said the Corvette was southbound at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday when it collided with the northbound pickup. It was raining at the time.

The circumstances that led to the collision are still being investigated, said Trooper Dustin LeRette.

Fred Weber said he was about 300 yards behind Stearns’ vehicle when the collision occurred. He said the Corvette had just passed him and the pickup had just passed a camper.

After hitting the Corvette, the pickup went vertically airborne and then landed nose-first in the ditch, Weber said.
