Whitefish City Council candidate Turner Askew was at the Flathead County Election Department Friday morning to file for a hand recount of votes. While initial election results Tuesday night showed Askew narrowly beating Martin McGrew for the third open seat on the council, subsequent recounts had McGrew edging out Askew by two votes. Askew said county commissioners will confirm his recount request Tuesday, and the recount is likely to happen by Thanksgiving, adding that he thinks the recount is necessary to bring closure to the election.
“No one’s ever going to believe that they found over two hundred ballots between election night and Wednesday morning,” Askew said. “If there was a mistake, we’ll correct it and if there wasn’t, then that’s how it is.”
