HELENA (AP) – Several fire departments to responded to a late-season blaze Monday afternoon near Bowman’s Corner south of Augusta.
According to Paul Spengler, disaster and emergency services coordinator for Lewis and Clark County, initial reports said two ranches were evacuated, but further investigation made him believe only the Skunk Creek ranch was — and no one was there at the time, the Independent Record reported on its Web site.
Late afternoon reports pegged the blaze at one to two miles long, and firefighters seemed to be getting it under control by 5 p.m., Spengler said.
“Winds are supposed to get worse before they get better, and the dew points are in the single digits,” he said. “But they’re getting a handle on it now.”
