Hungry Horse Man Pleads Not Guilty to Murder

By Beacon Staff

KALISPELL (AP) – A Hungry Horse man accused of fatally shooting his wife pleaded not guilty Thursday in District Court in Flathead County.

Charles Smith, 50, is charged with murder in the death of his wife, Jody.

The incident began on the evening of Dec. 9 with reports of a domestic disturbance and shots fired. Smith then called 911 and told dispatchers he had shot his wife, the sheriff’s office said.

When deputies arrived at the Hungry Horse home, Smith was waiting on the front porch and surrendered. Inside, deputies found the body of Jody Smith, who had been shot four times with a pistol.

Authorities say alcohol was involved, and the shooting happened after an argument.
