In the opening game of the Northwest A divisional tournament, the Polson Lady Pirates jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter over the Ronan Maidens and never relented, winning 54-37.
The Lady Pirates, led by senior Jessie Buckless with 13 points, used an effective motion offense to consistently find open shots close to the basket. On defense, Polson’s press rattled the Maidens throughout the first half.
No. 5 Ronan had no problem making it to the free-throw line or scoring inside, but the Maidens struggled from three-point range, going 1-13. Ronan shot 14-26 from the free-throw line. Senior Ishan Wylie led the Maidens with 12 points.
Polson, the No. 4 seed, shot well from everywhere on the court, finishing 19-44 from the field, including 4-11 from three-point range. Buckless was 3-4 for three-pointers. At the free-throw stripe, the Lady Pirates were 13-18.
Gov. Brian Schweitzer made an appearance at halftime, shaking hands and chatting with fans in the stands.
Polson advances to play No. 1 Bigfork on Friday at 2 p.m.
