BILLINGS – The field for fall’s gubernatorial election is now set as Republican candidate Roy Brown tours the state with his new running mate, Steve Daines, to challenge Gov. Brian Schweitzer on taxes and economic development.
Daines is a Bozeman technology executive perhaps best known for his sponsorship of an Internet-based campaign last year demanding more of the state’s surplus be returned to taxpayers.
Schweitzer returned $400 to tens of thousands of Montana households through property tax rebates. But Daines said Wednesday in Billings that it’s too late to give back more to taxpayers since “they already took care of spending all that.”
Daines and Brown, both engineers, said they will build their campaign around lower taxes, smaller government and the development of Montana’s natural resources.
