Burns: McCain Not First Choice, but He’ll Support Him

By Beacon Staff

SANDPOINT, Idaho – Former Senator Conrad Burns of Montana told delegates at the Idaho State Republican Convention that he’s thrown his support behind presumptive GOP presidential candidate John McCain — even though he originally would rather have seen the party choose somebody else for chief executive.

Burns said Friday, “I’m sitting here campaigning for John McCain. He wasn’t my first choice, but he is now.”

Burns, who was beaten in the 2006 election by Democrat Jon Tester, is the latest example of Republicans who are begrudgingly backing McCain despite questioning his conservative credentials.

Some have stopped short of that.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, who suspended his campaign Thursday, has said he won’t endorse the Arizona senator.
