Rehberg Credits Troop Surge for Progress in Iraq

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg of Montana is crediting the Bush administration’s troop surge for progress he says he witnessed during his weekend trip to Iraq.

The Republican was part of a bipartisan delegation led by House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey of Wisconsin that traveled to Iraq to meet with Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Iraqi officials.

Rehberg said Wednesday he saw crops growing, businesses opening and people going to work during his visit. He says it was a “marked, marked improvement” from his last trip to Iraq, in November 2005. Rehberg credited Petraeus’ leadership and the troop surge.
