Former Lt. Gov. Allen Kolsted Dies After Battle With Cancer

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Former Lt. Gov. Allen Kolstad has died after battling cancer.

Kolstad, 76, died Sunday evening at an assisted living facility in Chester. The Montana Republican Party says services are planned in Chester on Thursday afternoon.

Kolstad had been farming in the Chester area in recent years, retired from public service.

He was a longtime state lawmaker before serving as lieutenant governor under Republican Gov. Stan Stephens for two years. He resigned from that position to challenge U.S. Sen. Max Baucusin 1990. Democrat Baucus was re-elected.

Kolstad was appointed a member of the Republican National Committee in 2004, succeeding former Gov. Tim Babcock. Kolstad resigned that post last December due to ill health.
