St. Regis Mill Lays Off 40 Employees

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – The Tricon Timber mill in St. Regis has laid off 40 full- and part-time workers, citing a soft lumber market.

Tricon manager Angelo Ververis says the mill is cutting a shift. The move leaves 60 workers at the stud mill in St. Regis and Tricon’s post and pole plant in Superior — less than half of the 125 to 130 who were on the payroll a year ago.

The layoffs took effect last Thursday.

They come on the heels of Plum Creek Timber’s announcement earlier this month that 35 workers would be laid off from the company’s mill in Columbia Falls. Stimson Lumber closed its sawmill in Bonner this spring, putting 92 people out of work.
