Going-to-Sun Alpine Section Closing Next Week

By Beacon Staff

WEST GLACIER – The alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is closing next week.

Park officials say the eight-mile section of the road between the Loop and Logan Pass will be closed on Monday at 8 a.m.

The closure will allow park personnel to prepare the Sun Road for winter by removing guard rails and other barriers in at least 15 avalanche zones as well as removing all signs, displays and trash cans.

Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright says work also includes culvert and drain cleaning and the installation of poles to mark the side of the road for snow plows.

After the winter preparation work is complete, the road will be reopened for hiking and bicycling as weather and road conditions permit.
