Places: Glacier Nordic Center

By Beacon Staff

The Glacier Nordic Center maintains 12 kilometers of cross-country ski trails looping across the serene landscape of Whitefish Lake Golf Course. Trails, groomed daily, meander through trees and along gentle sloping terrain. Easy for beginners, a great workout for advanced skiers and an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the outdoors, the trails are an idyllic place to take in winter’s scenery without traveling deep into the wilderness.

This year, the GNC has repaired the nearly three-kilometer lighted loops and is experimenting with solar–powered lighting. Donations to the recently created “Keep it Lit” fund will be used exclusively to deal with lighting.

For those interested in organized ski programs and lessons, the center offers youth programs, including the Chet Hope Ski League and a Masters Program. The Masters Program is new this year and will include a variety of ski clinics including beginning skate and intermediate/advanced skate. Times and prices vary.

Due to increased grooming costs, fees have been raised slightly to $8 per day, $45 for an individual season’s pass and $90 for a family pass.

Take advantage of the Glacier Nordic Center’s Outback Ski Shack, located at the trailhead, which offers rental equipment, waxing and repairs, along with expert advice.

How to get there: From downtown Whitefish, continue north on U.S. Highway 93. Turn right into the Whitefish Lake Golf Club and Nordic Center, across from Grouse Mountain Lodge.
