Fugitives Arrested Near Troy After Jail Escape

SUPERIOR – The U.S. Marshals Service says two men who escaped from the Mineral County jail in Superior over the weekend have been arrested near Troy.

The Montana Highway Patrol arrested 26-year-old William Newhoff during a traffic stop Monday afternoon. Donald Schwindt, 42, fled from troopers and was arrested hours later in the mountains near Troy.

Schwindt and Newhoff had both been convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and were awaiting sentencing. Schwindt pleaded guilty in October 2008 to shooting at Flathead County deputies a year earlier.

U.S. Marshals Service supervisor Dana Rossmiller says officials are still investigating how the men escaped from jail and if they had any help.

The U.S. government contracts with Mineral County to hold federal prisoners. There is no federal penitentiary in Montana.
