Lakeside Council Supports Village Bill

By Beacon Staff

At its monthly meeting yesterday, the Lakeside Community Council passed a motion to endorse the “village bill” – legislation aimed at giving unincorporated towns increased control at the local level. Chairperson Gregg Schoh emailed this message to local politicians today: “The council wholeheartedly supports the concept of providing a mechanism in which communities can be afforded more control in local government. Please consider supporting this legislation.”

The legislation would allow unincorporated areas like Lakeside to form villages, a small representative body within the existing framework and control of county administration. Elected village boards would act as a liaison to the county commission, making recommendations on regulations and needed services, and have some regulatory control over land use decisions. The bill so far is being met with little enthusiasm from state lawmakers who say the idea needs to be further vetted.
