State Senate President Bob Story is proposing a bill setting up a commission to oversee spending of federal stimulus dollars in Montana. This, as lawmakers are making rapid progress on the stimulus in Washington – President Barack Obama could sign the bill into law by the end of the week. Federal lawmakers introduced the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act, which would protect millions of acres across Montana and the greater West. A Missoula Democrat has proposed raising the tax rate on residents making more then $250,000 a year. Election administrators are trying to switch more elections over to mail ballots, but stiff opposition exists in the Legislature. Montana State University President Geoff Gamble regrets a reporting oversight on requests for federal research funds that has irked Gov. Brian Schweitzer.
