By Beacon Staff

RONAN – A funeral is planned Monday in Arlee for celebrated tribal elder Aagnes Oshanee Kenmille, who taught hide tanning and beadwork to generations of people on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes say Kenmille died of natural causes Wednesday at St. Luke Community Hospital in Ronan. She was 93.

In 2003, the National Endowment for the Arts acknowledged Kenmille’s achievements by presenting her with a National Heritage Fellowship.

She taught tanning at Salish Kootenai College for 28 years, and was fluent in the languages of the Salish and the Kootenai tribes.
