Montana Lawmakers Endorse Ban on Wolf Hybrids

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The Montana Senate is endorsing a plan to ban wolf hybrids in the state.

Sen. Jim Peterson says the issue arose after livestock had been killed by a suspected wolf. Only after the animal had been tracked and killed did authorities realize it was a hybrid wolf.

Peterson says such animals should be banned.

The Senate unanimously endorsed his Senate Bill 344 in an initial vote Tuesday. If it clears a final vote in the chamber it will go the House.

Peterson says it is hard enough for wildlife authorities to manage real wolves, without having to deal with domesticated versions getting loose and causing problems.

The measure would ban the sale and breeding of the hybrids. Current animals would have to be registered and tattooed.
