In the February 2 issue of The New York Times Magazine (here), Magnum photographer Paolo Pellegrin focused his lens on eight of this year’s biggest Oscar contenders. In honor of Sunday night’s opening of the envelopes, here’s a link to a slide show of Pellegrin’s images (here). The images are striking portraits of Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, Mickey Rourke, Robert Downey Jr. and Kat Dennings. Away from the glitz and “Without hair and makeup – almost!” a sense of honesty creeps its way into photographs. And yet, because it’s Hollywood, it’s hard to say what’s real and what is fabricated.
