Lau Wins Another Wrestling Title

By Beacon Staff

Flathead High School’s Shawn Lau, a junior, added to his already-remarkable wrestling resume this weekend with a victory at the Tournament of Champions, an all-star wrestling event held in Great Falls. Lau, a two-time Class AA state champion, won the 130-pound division at the tourney, which brought together 57 of the state’s top wrestlers from all classes.

Of the seven champions from Class AA, two were from Flathead and one was from Glacier. Lau’s teammate, Joaquin Calderon, won the 125-pound division and Larry Francis, a dynamic freshman from Glacier won the 152-pound division. Polson’s Broc Picard was the 171-pound champion.

Other area wrestlers who were invited to tournament include Flathead’s Alejandro Calderon (119 pounds) and Tanner Beaman (135), Columbia Falls’ Kelly Houle (215) and Libby’s Seth Wright (171). Calderon, Houle and Wright all placed second in their weight classes, while Beaman didn’t make the finals. Congratulations to Lau and the rest of Northwest Montana’s wrestlers who went to the tourney.
