Man Charged with Scalding Boy Faces Drug Charges

A Whitefish man charged with forcing his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son into a bathtub full of scalding water, causing severe burns, is now facing drug charges.

Juan M. Vasquez pleaded not guilty Thursday to fraudulently obtaining dangerous drugs.

Prosecutors say Vasquez signed for three of his girlfriend’s prescriptions at a Whitefish pharmacy while she was at a Seattle hospital, where her son was being treated for second- and third-degree burns over more than 40 percent of his body.

Vasquez’s girlfriend told prosecutors she did not receive the prescriptions, which included painkillers and sleeping pills.

District Judge Stewart E. Stadler kept Vasquez’s bail at $120,000.

Vasquez is charged with aggravated assault and criminal endangerment for the injuries the boy suffered on Oct. 24, 2008. His trial is scheduled for June.
