Smurfit-Stone Closing Frenchtown Mill for 10 days

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. plans to close its Frenchtown mill for 10 days next month due to shrinking demand for cardboard products.

Employees and union representatives were told of the closure Thursday morning, the Missoulian reported on its Web site.

Missoula Job Service officials say the shutdown will begin on April 20. Job Service Director Wolf Ametsbichler says the scheduled restart on May 1 will include a second linerboard machine, which was shut down in early November.

The company won’t know until next week how many people the short-term closure will affect.

Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., the largest producer of cardboard box materials in North America, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late January.
