Monday: Emergency Landing, Ultimate Fighting and One, Tough Dog

By Beacon Staff

Good morning. One hundred years ago today, American explorer Robert Peary, his assistant Matthew Henson, and four Inuit guides became the first recorded people to reach the North Pole. And you can’t forget this American icon: the Twinkie, that golden sponge cake snack food with creamy filling, was invented on this day in 1930.

On the Beacon this morning, a small plane that lost its landing gear while dropping off skydivers near Kalispell was forced to make an emergency landing. No one was injured. On April 25, the Majestic Valley Arena will host a large mixed martial arts event featuring fighters from multiple states and Canada, including some of the Flathead Valley’s very own. South Kalispell business owners have mounted opposition to a proposed prerelease center there – an issue the city council is scheduled to vote upon at its meeting tonight. And chef Jim Gray cooks up a delicious-sounding shrimp recipe.

In other news, Grateful Nation offers full-ride college scholarships and early academic intervention to kids of Montana soldiers killed while serving on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. Montana is the first state to offer the program. As an ever-increasing number of new veterinarians treat pets instead of farm animals, ranchers have found that so-called “food supply veterinarians” are harder to come by. And Montana is poised to buck some federal gun control.

Finally, a pet dog that fell overboard in rough seas off Australia has been reunited with its owners after surviving alone on an island for four months. Enjoy the sunshine, everyone.
