2009 Pulitzer Prize Winning Photographers

The 2009 Pulitzer Prizes for Journalism were recently announced and photographers Patrick Farrell and Damon Winter took home this year’s top honors. Click here for a full list of winners.

Patrick Farrell, of the Miami Herald, won in the breaking news photography category for his provocative images of the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Ike and other lethal storms in Haiti and the humanitarian efforts that followed.

A People in Despair: Haiti’s Year Without Mercy

Damon Winter, of the New York Times, won the feature photography category for his story-telling images capturing the multiple aspects of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

A Vision of History

Other finalists for breaking news photography: Associated Press Staff for chronicling earthquake devastation in Sichuan, China; and Carolyn Cole of the Los Angeles Times for her coverage of political violence in Kenya.

Other finalists for feature photography: Carol Guzy of The Washington Post for her documentation of childbirth in Sierra Leon; and Sonya Hebert of The Dallas Morning News for her coverage of terminally ill patients at a Texas medical center.
