‘Master Gardeners’ Brighten Up Urban Landscapes

By Beacon Staff

Two recent graduates of the Montana State University Extension Master Gardener program are fulfilling their community service requirements by organizing community gardens at West Glacier School. Last Friday, the school had a potluck dinner and “shovel party” where volunteers and students built the gardens together. Today, May 14, the community is invited to attend the garden dedication and first planting from 2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the school.

Here’s a photo from last Friday’s party:

Fifty Flathead County residents recently completed the 12-week master gardening class. These “master gardeners” will each perform 20 hours of horticulture related community service in Bigfork, Whitefish, Kalispell, Columbia Falls and outlying areas.

The first Master Gardener class was started in 1972 by a Washington state extension agent. The purpose was to develop a group of gardeners that could help the agent meet the needs of the public in his county. The goal is the same today.
