Matt Harris finally got his singles state tennis title. Earlier today, the Whitefish senior finished his run to the top by defeating Billings Central’s Ben Nearpass in the Class A state tennis championship in Kalispell. Harris entered the tournament with an amazing four straight divisional titles, one state runner-up showing in singles and a championship in doubles. The one accolade his resume lacked was the singles title. He got it in convincing fashion at this year’s tournament.
Harris won each of his four matches at the tourney without dropping a set. In total, he won 48 games compared to his opponents’ nine. When I talked with Harris on Thursday, he said the singles title was the “one thing I’ve really wanted.” When I spoke with him again today after his victory, I asked him how he felt.
“Amazing,” he said. “I feel absolutely amazing.”
Congratulations to him. He deserved it. To see a story I’m writing about Harris, check the Web site next week. It will also be in the Beacon’s print edition that comes out next Wednesday.
