Grace Writing Another Check for Libby Hospital

By Beacon Staff

LIBBY – W.R. Grace & Co. says it is giving $250,000 to St. John’s Lutheran Hospital in Libby, for the 10th consecutive year.

Grace operated a Libby vermiculite mine, which closed in 1990, and is being sued over sickness the plaintiffs blame on exposure to asbestos from the mine. Grace’s checks to the hospital have been used to establish a clinic for people with asbestos-related disease, train personnel, buy equipment and subsidize medical care.

A federal jury in Missoula recently acquitted Maryland-based Grace and several former executives of charges they conspired to knowingly allow asbestos exposure in and around Libby.
