HELENA – A problematic computer system that has caused long lines, delays and frustration with vehicle registration is prompting a two-day shutdown at local offices.
The Montana Motor Vehicle Division says “technical challenges” with a new operating system are forcing it to close walk-in service on Monday and Tuesday at county motor vehicle offices across the state. It says the Title and Registration Bureau at Deer Lodge will also be closed.
The agency hopes the shutdown will allow it fix “significant technical issues” in the implementation of the Montana Enhanced Registration and Licensing Information Network, known as MERLIN. The system has been in use for about a month.
“Anytime you undertake a major overhaul of an outdated computer system it’s inevitable that you’ll come across unexpected problems. This break will allow us to address those issues,” said Brenda Nordlund, administrator of the Motor Vehicle Division.
The agency said the program will eventually improve service, and noted that online service like vehicle registration will continue during the shutdown.
“In the meantime, I’d like to personally thank Montana motorists, county treasurers and the MVD staff for their patience and understanding,” Nordlund said in a statement.
The Legislature first authorized MERLIN in 2003. It has allowed the agency to implement online scheduling of drivers license appointments, and decreased turnaround time for new titles.
