Car Licensing to Resume, but System Isn’t Fixed Yet

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The state planned to resume auto registration and titling services Wednesday after a two-day shutdown, but officials say customers likely will still see delays due to glitches in a new computer system.

Larry Fasbender, deputy director of the Department of Justice, says it could be two to three months before the new system is running as expected.

Max Lenington, Yellowstone County treasurer/assessor, says he didn’t see any improvement in speed Tuesday after programmers worked on the new system. He says it takes about two minutes to process a vehicle registration under the new system, compared with 15 seconds under the old system.

The new system also provides online renewal of vehicle registration, which is working.
